Sainsbury’s awarded Farm Data Safe Certification Mark for Good Farm Data Governance

22nd January 2025

Food retailer Sainsbury’s has been fully certified by Farm Data Principles for its commitment to good farm data governance.

The organisation has clearly and transparently explained how they will conform to the four principles of good farm data governance set out by Farm Data Principles in all their business activities.

Professor Tina Barsby OBE said, “We are delighted to welcome Sainsbury’s as a certified organisation for good farm data governance. They join an increasing number of organisations who recognise the importance of engaging in a clear and transparent dialogue with their customers when it comes to handling farm-derived data.

Gavin Hodgson, Director of Agriculture, Aquaculture and Horticulture at Sainsbury’s, said: “We are proud to be the first retailer to achieve the Farm Data safe certification. It is a key milestone in demonstrating our commitment to farmers when it comes to how seriously we take farm data governance.

The Farm Data Principles scheme, which is endorsed by the NFU, BIAC, AICC, IAgrE and NPA, focusses on four key areas, namely:

  • Ownership and control of the data

  • Clarity about the value and benefit of data sharing

  • Keeping farm data safe

  • Making data easy

The Data Handler Statement for Sainsbury’s, which explains how the retailer conforms to those four key principles can be viewed on the website, where you can also see other companies and organisations that have already achieved full or provisional certification.
